India wins membership at ECOSOC

In September 2020, India contested for and won a seat to the Commission on Status of Women, a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). India’s term will begin in 2021 for next 4 years. India contested alongside Afghanistan and China, where both India and Afghanistan won the seat whereas China failed to get to the halfway mark. 
 
UN ECOSOC:
·The United Nations Economic and Social Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, responsible for coordinating the economic and social fields of the organization. 
·Established in 1945
·It is responsible for promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems; facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. 
·ECOSOC’s purview extends over 70% of the human and financial resources of the entire UN system.
·The Council’s 54 member Governments are elected by the General Assembly for three-year terms.
 
Commission on Status of Women:
·Is a functional commission of the ECOSOC
·It is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. 
·It was established by ECOSOC resolution 11(II) of 21 June 1946.
·The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
·45 member states of the UN serve as members of the Commission at any one time. 
·The Commission consists of one representative from each of the 45 member states elected by the ECOSOC on the basis of equitable geographical distribution:
13 members from Africa, 11 from Asia, 9 from Latin America and Caribbean, 8 from Western Europe and other States and 4 from Eastern Europe.
 
On June 18 2020, India was elected as one of the non-permanent members to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) with an overwhelming majority of 184 votes out of 192, where the minimum requirement was 128.
