PM Modi conferred with 'Goalkeeper Award' for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

In News Recently Prime Minister Modi was conferred with the prestigious global goalkeeper award for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by his government and his contribution towards cleanliness and spreading awareness on the issue. The award was given by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation at the fourth annual Global Goals Awards on the sidelines of the UN session.

Global Goal Keeper Award PM Modi dedicated the award to crores of Indians who have contributed to the Swachh Bharat dream and made it part of their daily lives. He said, “In the last five years a record of more than 11 crore toilets were constructed. If this mission has benefited someone the most it is the poor of this country and the women”. The Prime Minister also recognized the significance of getting the award in the year of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The PM expressed happiness over Gandhiji’s dream of cleanliness about to be fulfilled. He said the World Health Organisation has also recognized the effort of his government and Swachh Bharat campaign, created a possibility to save 3 lakh human lives. He also offered to share best practices with other countries to improve World Sanitation Coverage. The campaign has also helped to achieve certain goals set by the UN. Background Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) is a nation-wide campaign in India that aims to clean up the streets, roads, and infrastructure of urban and rural areas. This Mission was officially launched on 2 October 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi by PM Narendra Modi. The objectives of Swachh Bharat include eliminating open defecation through the construction of household-owned and community-owned toilets and establishing an accountable mechanism of monitoring toilet use. Run by the Government of India, the mission aims to achieve an "open-defecation free" (ODF) India by 2 October 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Goalkeepers, Global Goals Awards The Goalkeepers, Global Goals Awards aim to recognize the extraordinary stories of those remarkable people who are taking action to dedicate life to the achievement of sustainable development goals by 2030. It was the fourth edition of the awards on September 24, 2019. Presented in five categories The 2019 Goalkeepers, Global Goals Awards were - •Progress Award (age 16 – 30); •Changemaker Award (age 16 – 30); •Campaign Award (age 16 – 30); •Goalkeepers Voice Award (any age); and •Global Goalkeeper Award (any age). The Global Goalkeeper Award recognizes political leaders for their commitment to the global goals via impactful work in their own country.
