India at G7

In News Recently PM Modi participated in the 45th G7 summit held in Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. Though not a part of the G7 group, India attended the conference as a special invitee by French President Emmanuel Macron, which reflects personal chemistry between the Indian PM and the French President and also highlights India’s importance as a world economic power. Key Highlights of our PM’s speech at G7 summit The Prime Minister highlighted India's efforts in putting digital technology to use to fight social inequalities through empowerment and inclusion. The PM also highlighted India’s efforts in the elimination of single-use plastic and harness solar energy at a special session on ‘Biodiversity, Oceans and Climate’ at the G7 summit. The PM underlined India's efforts to conserve water and protect flora and fauna to ensure a sustainable future. The PM sought a global coalition in disaster-resilient infrastructure and work towards creating a pool of trained volunteers to help people recover after a natural disaster. PM Modi’s bilateral interactions with world leaders The PM met the new British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and spoke about strengthening bilateral ties with special focus on strengthening trade and economic relations. The meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres especially focussed on efforts to mitigate climate change and also a wide range of subjects were discussed. President Macky Sall of Senegal also met PM Modi to discuss ways to expand bilateral ties in a manner that is mutually beneficial to each other. Besides this, the PM also met German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and the US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit. Special Invitees to the 45th G7 summit Apart from India, other G7 invitees included Australia, Burkina Faso, Chile, Egypt, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, and Spain. India had been invited after a gap of 14 years at the G7summit. Last time being in 2005, when India was invited to the summit. The then British Prime Minister Tony Blair had invited the then Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, at 31st G8 summit (G8-included Russia). Key Highlights of PM Modi and President Trump meeting In the backdrop of removal of Article 370 and Pakistan trying to internationalize the Kashmir topic, PM Modi reiterated all the issues between India and Pakistan are bilateral in nature including Kashmir and India does not want to bother any other country on the issues. The above views of PM Modi were supported by President Trump who earlier offered to mediate between the two neighbors on Kashmir issue. Besides this, the two leaders discussed bilateral trade issues and mutually agreed to restart the trade talks soon which was derailed following the US decision to withdraw the Generalised System of Preferences Scheme for India in June which deprived Indian exporters duty-free access to the US market. About Group of Seven (G7) The Group of Seven (G7) is an international intergovernmental economic organization consisting of the seven largest IMF-described advanced economies in the world: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Earlier between the years 1997 and 2014, it was also known as Group of Eight when Russia was included in the group. Russian membership was suspended by other members of the group due to its military intervention in Ukraine and annexation of Crimea. G7 Background The concept of a forum for the world's major industrialized countries emerged before the 1973 oil crisis. The G7 came into being in 1975. It was earlier known as Group of six for a year before the inclusion of Canada in 1976. About G7 Summits The G7 summit is held annually where the most advanced economies of the world come together to discuss global issues. The leaders of the group, after mutual agreement, decide policies and remedial steps to be taken on the issues discussed. The summit Presidency and location is rotated among members of the G7 wherein the host country holds the Presidency and also sets the agenda of the year.
