Q5(a). Contribution of Savitribai Phule in Gender Equality

Q. What are the main factors responsible for gender inequality in India? Discuss the contribution of Savitribai Phule in this regard. (150 words) (10 marks)
 
Answer:
India has progressed considerably on the path of gender equality in recent years. However, gender inequality is still an unfortunate reality in India. The main factors responsible for it are:
·Uneven access to education
·Lack of equal job opportunities
·Job segregation,that is, most jobs not considered suitable for women
·Sexual exploitation at work place
·Lack of political representation
·Social mindset about gender-based roles
·Lack of property rights to women in practice
·Dowry
 
Savitribai Phule is considered to be the first woman teacher in India. She was illiterate at the time of marriage, but she got educated with the help of her husband, completed the teachers' training course, started a school for girls and became the first qualified woman teacher in India in 1848. She had to face tremendous harassment from conservative elements who found the idea of women's education repugnant and against culture. However, she boldly continued her work and motivated other women to become educated and empowered.
