Q6(b). Service is the best way to find yourself

Q. What does each of the following quotations mean to you?
(b) ‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.’—Mahatma Gandhi (150 words) (10 marks)

Answer:
This quote of Mahatma Gandhi explains the importance of service not only for making a better society, but also to discover our own selves. Most people do their jobs for extraneous considerations like money, power or fame. They often don’t like the job, but they still do it because it provides them the means to achieve what they finally desire, that is, wealth, power or fame.

When we serve people selflessly, we discover our true self because we are not serving people for anything else, but for the sake of service itself. We can serve others selflessly only if we are doing the things that we desire from our heart and we love to do them. Hence, when we serve others, we identify our own true nature and discover ourselves. Once we know ourselves and perform our actions according to our nature, we achieve happiness and success.
