Q5(b). Conflict of the Internet with Traditional Values

Q. ‘The current internet expansion has instilled a different set of cultural values which are often in conflict with traditional values.’ Discuss. (150 words) (10 marks)

Answer:
Indian culture and traditions are considered to be among the oldest in the world. Indian culture includes the importance of family, sacredness of marriage, respect towards elders and observance of social traditions in all spheres of life. However, due to the expansion of internet and smart phones, Indians are now learning the cultures and traditions of the rest of the world, which is fast changing their own cultural values.

In recent years, Indian youths have been exposed to western values like individualism, materialism, rights, equality and freedom. Some of these values are opposed to the Indian traditional values. Indians are today more concerned about their own interest than that of their family or nation. They are more vocal of rights than of duties. The rise of materialism has led to more corruption and crime while the explosion of pornographic material is responsible for the increase of sexual violence against women. Indian youths must be guided to learn the best values of Indian and western traditions to lead a happy and successful life.
